Minister of Music, pianist, choral director, educator, University of Washington alumna, and gospel music master whose ministry has helped shape generations of worshipers, students, and musicians.

From her earliest years at the piano to decades of leadership at Mount Zion and the University of Washington, Mrs. Byrdwell’s story is a testimony of giftedness offered back to God.
Mrs. Phyllis Maria McDonald Byrdwell was born in Fresno, California, the oldest of eight siblings, to Stanley J. and Evelyn L. McDonald. Her mother was her first piano instructor, nurturing the gift that would become a lifelong ministry of music, teaching, and worship leadership.
Mrs. Byrdwell and Rev. Frank Byrdwell knew one another in Fresno, where both families were recognized for extraordinary musical talent. They married in 1963, and after a visit to Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle, accepted Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney’s invitation to lead the Music Ministry. They arrived in Seattle in September 1966.
Across decades, Mrs. Byrdwell has served Mount Zion, the University of Washington, Lakeside School, and the broader gospel music community with rare excellence — blending musical mastery, spiritual conviction, and generous mentorship.

Early musical calling
Started piano at age three, learned first from her mother, and was playing for churches by age ten.
Marriage and ministry partnership
Married Rev. Frank Byrdwell, beginning a life of ministry partnership rooted in faith and music.
Mount Zion music ministry
Accepted the call to Seattle and began shaping Mount Zion’s Music Ministry under Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney’s invitation.
Hall of Fame recognition
Inducted into the Washington Music Educators Association Hall of Fame for distinguished service in music education.
Global worship leadership
Served as a Worship Leader at the Baptist World Alliance Conference in Birmingham, England.
Continuing legacy
Retired from Lakeside School after 31 years and continues gospel music instruction, worship leadership, and ministry service.

After 31 years at Lakeside School, she continues to teach and lecture at the University of Washington, sharing gospel music with students across generations.

Directs and supports choirs and worship teams, including the Combined Choir, Women’s Chorus, Youth Choir, Junior Choir, New Revelation, and Praise in Worship Team.

Longtime founding director whose choir leadership has introduced thousands of students to the gospel music tradition.

Served for 31 years as a music educator, retiring as Music Coordinator for the Middle School Division.
